Port and Harbor Security News:
MTR attended the 2nd Annual Maritime Security Expo and Conference USA October 29-30, 2003 in New York City.
It was a great way to learn first hand what all the commotion is about port and harbor security. There were many informative talks addressing protection of bridges, cargo containers, offshore oil rigs, railroads, power plants, ports and cruise ships. There was an exhibit hall full of extremely useful and innovative products and systems that were as elegant as they were practical. It did not take long to discover that few products or systems had actually been ordered for port and harbor security to ward off terrorism. Yes, there were dive companies who inspect hulls for ship maintenance and for drug interdiction. Yes, there were go - fast chase boats, including Intercept Boats NightCat 27 looking very businesslike. Were any sold at the show? No. Were there people at the show who could make the decisions to purchase these fine wares? Yes. But they were becoming educated as to what is available when and if they can figure out how to pay for all the newly legislated security measures. Several exhibitors reported that valuable contacts were made for future business.
